So, internet was not working last night, and right after it did today... the mouse stopped working. Considering the wire has been frayed (and taped) since I got it from someone in the family about a year ago this was not exactly sudden but... argh. I still have the touch pad but it's cumbersome to use and makes my hands hurt.

I don't even know if any shops in walking distance SELL these things... :'(

Anyway, yesterday I watched some Star Trek. Going through the eps I haven't yet seen or can't recall well enough on season two, so yesterday it was The Changeling, The Apple, The Doomsday Machine and I, Mudd.
None of the episodes were mind blowingly good but The Changeling and The Doomsday Machine were sort of ok, if a bit similar in the base plot, and TDM had a pretty problematic portrayal of mental illness/PTSD, don't recommend to people that would get to especially. >_> The Apple I watched half of and then skipped the rest because I couldn't with the colonialism, especially from McCoy... urgh.

Generally, what is up with giving Spock awesome lines that actually make sense, like "You persist on applying human standards to non-human cultures" (in Apple when McCoy is insisting the natives are suffering from their lack of "progress" despite being seemingly happy, peaceful and so healthy they are basically immortal) or "Specifics, Doctor. Labels do not make arguments" (I, Mudd) in reply to (again) McCoy bitching about a certain new crewmember giving him the creeps by being too polite and professional but not otherwise personable enough in McCoy's view. IOW not enough like him and, to add insult to bigotry, rather like Spock is. Which Spock rightly calls him on after Bones specifies his gripes.

The thing is, Spock says these things and then the narrative either makes the others talk against him until he more or less agrees with them, or like in I, Mudd, it turns out McCoy was right about the crewmember. :(

Also, I rather winced at Uhura being mind-wiped and forced to learn to read again being played for laughs in The Changeling, even if it was only temporary. Teehee, brain damage, that's hilarious! Not. Also the whole "supercomputer tries to read a female character's mind and decides to wipe her because her thought were so chaotic" + the tradition of portraying women as more emotional and less logical than men. PRESUMABLY this could have happened to a male character too, but it didn't. Also the computer was drawn to Uhura in the first place because she was singing while working iow doing something "unnecessary" and "emotional". So all that was awkward.

I, Mudd in general was... funny in some parts but also had the old nagging woman stereotype. *sigh*

Random thought: Is it just these eps or is Chekov always written as bit of a leech/too desperate for sex? I'm not sure whether to go "ew" or be amused at this characterization being applied to the new!trek version of the character. I mean, (hopefully?) not in canon but I think I might read that fic. >3>
I haven't actually read that much fic with new!Chekov, but it feels like he'd be likely to be prone to Too Much Cute/Woobie-syndrome? For that matter, I wonder how old!Chekov is usually portrayed in fics...

Even little things become big losses when a person is struggling for money. When small comforts are taken away, it feels crushing.
