Something I found a bit ago and though I'd share. A few years ago a lot of my mother's family were gathered at her childhood home to my grandfather's funeral, and me and my cousins went through the books there, finding some pretty bizarre ones.
One of those was a "Craft Book for Girls" from 1957, a Finnish translation of a originally German book. At one point, there was a portion with examples of what the author considered "good" and "bad" crafts. With examples and description of why they were or were not tasteful. With the bad example CROSSED OVER and trashed in the text. :'D

Picture 1000. A senseless drawn model, with no unity in the forms. > Picture 1001. The decoration and cuts form a whole
Pic. 1002. A coping saw work - in addition with a delicate subject - is a mistake > Pic. 1003. Instead of a *wasteful* coping saw work, we will make a sturdy toy out of wood.
Pic. 1004. Folk art, which has been modernized tastelessly > Pic. 1005. This is also metaphorical, but genuine and sensitive.
Ok, so that "IS A MISTAKE >:I" was pretty harsh, but then it gets worse...

(text above: Bad forms > Good forms)
Pic. 1006. This sort of bizarre, crosseyed creatures might delight an adult, but surely we do not want to awaken love towards such mutants. > Pic. 1007 For our little girls a doll is a child, which they want to nurture, cherish and love like their own children later. That's why we will give them pretty, childlike dollchildren as toys.
And then it's more ranting about how coping saw works are ugly and terrible blah blah. While the doll entry the most horrifying, the next page the author is again v. passionate about perceived bad taste.

Pic. 1010. A lamp with coping work pictures. But pictures are not meant as an exhibition of sawing skills, and that's why no one would want a lamp like this in their room. > Pic. 1011 Professionally well made lamp, with a simple leg and shade. This lamp is simple and beautiful and suits any room.
Pic. 1012. A showy vase, which supposedly *looks like something.* It's base form is hidden completely under tasteless decoration, not to mention that the flowers put into it will look worthless! An example of the worst possible taste! > Pic. 1013. A simple, handmade vase with beautifully curving forms and which is always pretty and suits the purpose. Flowers will look better in it.
Ok, granted the author might have a point with that last. There are still nicer ways to say it. I'D
