The usual stuff

iow university and Doctor Who and other films.
University: Had the (first non-home) exam on Thursday, think it might have gone ok at least. Only blanked out completely on one author's name I wanted to refer to, and he wasn't super important. Then, yesterday we had the introduction to the next part, which is going to be about the old Swedish farmer society and how it changed 1800s-1900s. Seems a lot more interesting than the the first part so yay.
Films: After that I visited
gluecookie and we watched A Midwinter's Tale/In the Bleak Midwinter, a film I'd seen half of years ago on tv and could never find after. I happened to mention my fruitless efforts to
gluecookie and she and her family actually went and hunted down a DVD. \¤3¤/ And yes, it was even better than I remembered. Then we also watched Seeds of Death, more on that later.
It's a apparently kind of obscure film directed by Kenneth Branagh in 1995, about a bunch of peculiar failed actors who try to do a charity Christmas production of Hamlet in a few weeks and with no budget, led by a depressed and slightly neurotic curly headed actorpretty sure he's the secret lovechild of Withnail and Marwood. Or a time lord. Or both, who has been trying to get a role in a series of science fiction films (ahehehe) and thinks the production will be a nice distraction from the stress.
It both is and not. It's just... kind of remignant of Withnail & I in that all the character are more or less cracked, but A Midwinter's Tale is, despite some heavy themes like why life is (or is not) worth living, still essentially a optimistic story about the characters connecting with one another and gaining a family despite the odds. And it's just. Totally adorable while not feeling too sugary? I guess (and the whole film is in black and white, jsyk).
It also has some fun lines/quotes to use out of context. Some of our favourites:
On someone being overly negative: "Oh now you're just being a naughty cynical sausage."
And on assuring an understudy panicking over fencing scenes, another actor just advices her to throw a boot at him if all goes wrong, at which point he'll go: "The boot! The boot was poisoned!" (I now want to see Ainley!Master do this because of reasons)
...and there was one more but I forgot it.
Moving onto Seeds of Death, not to be confused with Seeds of Doom. x'D
I tried to watch it before but got too annoyed by the grumpy rocket scientist guy. Luckily he turned out not to have as big a role as I feared. Anyway, plot in a nutshell: Two and Jamie and Zoe materialise into a museum, and it turns out they've landed in Earth's future where all transport (?) is apparently done using this T-Mat system, which is kind of like a less advanced version of the transporter tech in Star Trek. Then some Ice Warriors get hold of the control station on the Moon and things go to hell.
Maybe I was just too tired, but the plot itself didn't really engage me, though I did like how stylishly the serial was filmed, for example dissolving plot relevant patterns over another image and such. There are also a lot of really cute scenes with the Tiniest Tardis Team. And it was amusing to see the male companion be mostly useless for once. x''D
Poor Jamie, a lot of the time the Doctor and Zoe and the Science Lady (who is the only one who really understands how T-Mat works) do science stuff and Jamie's just sitting around waiting for some action to happen and generally not understanding anything. :'D Even the DOCTOR thought he shouldn't go to the moon on a rocket with him and Zoe but Jamie is all "I GO WHERE THE DOCTOR GOES D':<"
One scene later on is especially hilarious because Zoe and Science Lady are doing science in the bg and Jamie... rocks in a chair and drinks a milkshake (or something). Aww Scottish puppy man. :'3 At least he did get to save the Doctor using his action skillz in the end though. ♥
Also the Doctor is almost drowned by foam and it is hilarious. And a bit terrible but still hilarious. For a moment, with his head covered in foam, he kind of looks like Three... x''D Talking about which, I kind of want to see Three just wading in there all "What's the problem here? *pick Two up by the scruff*" Because Two is teeny.
Things that are nearly as cute as that scene though.
1) Two running. Just. Oh Pat...
2) Two hopping and shaking his fists like a little kid going: "Nuuu u don't want to kill me I'm... I'M A GENIUS :'I!" aww bby. Also it works.
And then he's kind of terrible in the end. Like, whoa Doctor. o_o; But yeah.
