Doctor Who thoughts

Watched The Snowmen with my sister today, and it was... pretty? Didn't get any intense feelings for or against otherwise. Bit concerned the big mystery on the new companion is going to turn out another circular plot a'la River, but nyeh. Richard E. Grant was lovely to see but didn't really do that much, not that there was time for it, I suppose. Made me miss Shalka!verse mostly...(fiiiiiiiiics~)
Now let's talk about Classic who instead. ¤3¤/
Continued to corrupt my sister by making her watch a few serials before Christmas while I was finishing last minute gifts and could sit by and point out stuff. So we watched Horns of Nimon, The Daemons and The Five Doctors (the last more or less her pick after I'd mentioned it). The Deamons is still such an adorable silly episode. Oh Master, you and your wacky hobbies. He must have been so excited he found some use for the sacrificial maiden robe that came with the Satanic Priest Set after all. *headshake*
Most importantly, however, I watched the rest of Mind of Evil the night before last. MY FEELS.
What do I even say about this serial? All the serials I've seen of the Three era so far (seasons 1-2 minus Colony is Space, The Sea Devils, The Time Monster and The Three Doctors) have been from the time when he was stuck on Earth with Unit, and they've all been fabulous serials.
I love that the Doctor is a grumpy, flashy bastard (and the reactions of the characters around him to it) and the occasional flashes of angst when one realizes how much he must hate the situation he's in, stuck on earth and at times finding it hard to like the humans he can't get away from. And Jon Pertwee being magnificent and Three's especially magnificent wardrobe.
I also love the supporting cast, Brig and Liz and Jo and Benton and Yates and the rest, and how there really is a sense of connection between everyone. I cannot even with Nicholas Courtney, the Brigadier has such perfect unimpressed expressions at all the shenanigans he has to deal with. Precious thing.
Don't even get me started on Roger Delgado's Master or I'm going to cry. Mostly over the actor, but the character is hardly better. So charming and convinced he could never fail and... it doesn't really feel like he gets morals, or at least that they should apply to him, which almost makes him seem innocent in a strange way. Like a kid with underdeveloped sense of right and wrong doing horrid things.
And as a D/M shipper, it's very easy to ship him with the Doctor, with all the USTy banter and the games and the Master being desperate to get the Doctor's attention most of the time and the times when they actually work together for a bit and one sees how they could achieve so much if they were capable of making some compromises and actually being grown ups for a bit. Maybe. And of course they NEVER DO. D8
And did I mention the occasional attempts to tackle the darker aspects of human nature, especially in season 7? Until they toned it down and went for lighter escapades which I also enjoy.
But yes, was actually going to write about Mind of Evil. Which had pretty much everything mentioned above in such quantities that after finishing it I had to smother my face in a pillow and whimper for a while. The Doctor and the Master being slashy! Jo kicking ass and saving everyone (even if things got messed up again but not due to any mistake by her)! Brig dressing up as a milkman!
Also Jo and the Doctor were so adorable in some scenes my heart ached. They are the cutest... whatever they actually are, mentor and pupil? Not even sure how I see it really. But it is cute.
Talking about people being cute, I'm really a bit dismayed I've only ever found one Yates/Benton fic (which was lovely but not very long and with a not-really happy ending). It just seems like there's so much potential there... Mind of Evil alone could provide such H/C fodder (not to mention later plot developments) with all the peril and not being sure if the other is alive and having to keep a stiff upper lip about it. Really, I should write it myself but I'm uncertain I could do them justice. :/
Another thing in Mind of Evil that was pretty cool were the Chinese characters, who actually had something like personalities and different cultures/languages and that the Brigadier got thumbed on the nose a bit over his ignorance re. that.
I could go on (especially re. the D/M stuff), but perhaps it's best I leave things here. Until next time! ♥
