Warnings: The barest slashy suggestions. Slightly cracky premise?
Notes: So, I asked for an AU setting from
lauand, and she gave me:
Any time period - Spies and deceptions, cat and mouse games.
Not sure this fits that perfectly, especially since I could only think of one point of reference I felt I knew well enough. See what I mean?
Title:
You Only Live Twice
The man was still smiling that smile that seemed to belong in the classroom. In the raw electric light it seemed to have caught a sharp edge.
Or maybe it was just the large knife in his hand.
"Mr. Sha, we meet again." The man said softly, and stepped closer.
Despite himself, Gojyo felt like taking a step back.
It was kinda difficult thought, what with being tied up and all. Damn he was fucked, in the bad way.
"So, I guess you're not really an innocent bystander caught in the events?" Gojyo said.
Hakkai, if that was his name, shook his head, with the slightest hint of regret.
"No, I fear not. Did you really think so?"
Gojyo grinned.
"I had my suspicions. Schoolteacher's aren't usually that good at throwing knives, are they?"
Hakkai smiled back, and if it wasn't for the situation, Gojyo could have sworn it was genuine.
"You'd be surprised." He mumbled.
"Well, it was fun while it lasted." Said Gojyo. He'd always thought it would be the best way to die in the company of a hottie, and if the situation left something to be desired...
Hakkai was looking at him contemplatively, petting the back of his knife with slow movements.
"So, you gonna tell me what it's all about?" Gojyo said quickly.
"That would be a rather basic mistake, don't you think?" Replied the cool, calm voice.
Gojyo shrugged as well as he could, and then dug out his most charming leer.
"Hey, I'm just curious. Why wouldn't I be, after all we've been through?"
"Fair enough. But I'm afraid it's really quite simple." Despite this statement, Hakkai apparently had to consider his story for a while.
"You have perhaps heard of Dr. Nii?"
Gojyo nodded. The man was a genius, a legend of a kind. Had switched sides at some point, and changed his name probably more often than he changed underwear.
Hakkai continued, his green eyes staring gravely down at Gojyo.
"I was...am, a project of his."
"A clone?"
"Something like that."
"Is that why you work for him, then?"
For a moment, there was something almost...lost in those eyes, and then Hakkai shrugged.
"What else would I do?"
"Come with me." Gojyo said without stopping to think.
Hakkai's ever-present smile remained cool.
"Very romantic. Has it worked often before?"
Lying wouldn't work, this one was too smart. Gojyo shook his hair back and let his smile widen. He had nothing to be ashamed of.
"Sure, hundreds of times."
"And eventually you grew bored of them, these unfortunate people who followed you, didn't you Mr. Sha?"
Gojyo pouted, no other word for it.
"They got what they wanted, I think. And who says it was always me who grew bored?"
Hakkai raised an eyebrow.
"Well, okay...but hey, it's different when you're about to die, you know."
"Yes."
Damn the man had pretty eyes, especially when they got all dark and...Gojyo suddenly regretted being tied up for a whole new reason.
"It was nice thought, that time we were stuck in the cabin...usually in a situation like that people get fed up with my company after a while."
"They do?" Again with the eyebrow.
"Yeh, you know...not that I don't know how to distract people, but not so much if they've got extra holes in them. Pleasant bedside behavior is not exactly part of the training, and all."
Hakkai shook his head.
"I enjoyed your company very much." He said quietly.
"Well, thanks."
"The...other distractions, later, were most pleasant as well."
"The pleasure was all mine."
"Well, I suppose that's that." Hakkai concluded with a final air.
"You're really gonna do it then?" Gojyo asked.
Hakkai shook his head ruefully.
"I see only one thing I can do. Now, don't move Mr. Sha, or this might hurt."
Gojyo sighed, and looked deep into those beautiful eyes, for one last time.
"Pity." He breathed out. And then, "No hard feelings, eh? The one who lives by the sword and all that."
"Ready?"
He nodded, and as Hakkai raised the knife, Gojyo closed his eyes.
There was the barest sound of displaced air as the knife sliced through it, and then...no pain, the man really was good at this.
It took Gojyo a while to realize he was not in fact dead. He opened his eyes, looked down at the cut ropes, and then at the grinning man in front of him.
"Huh?" Agent Sha said, showing his famed eloquence.
"I changed my mind." Hakkai said calmly, sheathing his knife.
Gojyo still stared at him. Hakkai shook his head an tutted at him.
"Now, better get going. Not like we had all the time in the world here."
Gojyo recovered.
"No...no, you're right. Which way?"
"Come on, I'll show you."
Of course, that was not the end of it by far, and as they fled that place, Gojyo couldn't help feeling some things were going to change drastically.
Oh well, the old way had been starting to seem stale anyway.
