Title: untitled saiyuki AU fic, chapter 2
Author/Artist: me
Website: http://keraaminenkettu.deviantart.com/
Warnings: AU, very very AU, beware. Names (and in some cases, gender) have been changed to protect the innocent.
Pairing(s): Um. maybe later there might be a smidgen of 85, I hope. in a rather innocent way, because I'm shy about writing pairings at all. I might be promising too much.
Notes: Written last night. Nothing much happening yet...still not entirely sure where this story is going, so all suggestions are appreciated.
In the morning Hale's step mom looked at him across the table, a bit worried.
"You don't look very rested, didn't you sleep well again?"
Hale mumbled something vague as an answer. Mrs Erwin sighed, and poured herself another cup of coffee.
"Do you know, Hale, we really should buy you new glasses. You've had those since before you came to live with us, and how many years before that? Maybe something with thinner frames?"
Hale shook his head, staring at his last piece of toast.
"No, these are just fine...I really have to leave for school now. Bye!"
She looked like she wanted to say something, but in the end just waved at him.
There was no one at the frozen bus station yet. He'd forgotten his gloves, and had to stuff his hands inside his sleeves as best he could. Sarah was the next to arrive, walking angrily and tearing colourful bows out of her hair. She gave Hale a pointed glare, as if to say this would never be spoken of.
They stood there and stared ahead for a while, until Sarah said:
"So, did you go see your sister?"
"...I decided not to."
"Coward." But she said the last one so quietly Hale could pretend not to have heard.
Some time later, after Sarah's scowl had deepened a bit, there were running steps and Gabrielle ran to the bus station, her hair wet, and with her coat open. She stopped next to them, panting a bit.
"Was I late? I was so sure I was gonna be..."
"Does it look like you're late? It's the goddamn bus that is!" Sarah snapped. Then she sighed and dug a woollen cap out of her bag, slapping it on Gabriella's head. The cap was pink, with yellow knitted flowers.
"Hey, is this your cap? Shouldn't you be wearing it yourself?"
"No."
"But pink really suits you."
"Just shut up and die, Hale."
Hale listened with half an ear as Gabby started a rambling story about what had happened at the restaurant, about a manga that she'd read last night and random things that came to her mind. Sarah listened with her hands crossed, frowning, thought no more than usual.
They were an odd pair, one a thin, blond girl, whose smiles you could count with the fingers of one hand, and the other loud, dark and with a grin that could light a room, or possibly an entire house. Nowadays Gabby was also taller than Sarah, despite being three years younger. Hale remembered how after Gabrielle's growth spurt it had annoyed Sarah, and how Gabby had started hunching her shoulders, until Sarah told her in no uncertain terms to quit it.
"--and then he hit the monster with it, and it went all squished! It was so bad ass." Gabrielle ended.
"Okay. Where the hell is. that. bus." Sarah ground out.
"You know, if you ate more you wouldn't always be so cold." Hale decided to contribute.
"Yeah, like you're one to talk." Sarah said eyeing him incredulously.
Gabrielle looked thoughtful.
"Your mom says that too." She pointed out.
"She just thinks it's the kind of thing moms should say." Sarah countered rolling her eyes.
The bus did arrive eventually, and Gabriella and Hale dragged Sarah quickly past the driver, so she didn't have time to tell what she thought about buses being late because of cold weather. She was cold enough to let them do that without (much)protest.
At school the day progressed in it's usual sluggish fashion. Their chemistry lessons in the middle of the day were cancelled, and Hale desided to spend the time reading in the library. He curled at a corner of an well-worn sofa, and looked alternatively at his book and out of the window. Two other students, who'd apparently decided to use the time to work on their group project, arrived a bit after him and settled at a table, paying no attention to Hale. Occasionally they spoke with low voices, nothing particularly interesting.
The book was a bit boring, so Hale was looking out the window when the boys from their upstairs neighbor walked through the gate. What was their name again? He remembered the faded word above their own crisp one in the tenant board...Correl, no Cornell, wasn't it?
The older one had one hand throw over the shoulders of his brother, who looked like he didn't particularly want to come to the school. No wonder, considering how much he's late, Hale thought. There was a small group of shady looking boys next to the wall, and one with short spiky white hair waved at them. The younger boy tried to go that way, but his brother tightened his hand and said something, and the white haired boy got an apologetic shrug while the younger boy was steered away.
Hale smiled a bit when he saw who they went to instead. Not that Red wasn't a fairly good student, polite and general defender of the weak, but it was also rumored his family was something big in the underworld. Who knows, could be just rumors. It seemed him and Bigbrother were friends, anyway...maybe the younger one dyed his hair to imitate Red?
"Janet, would you please concentrate on the project?" a slightly annoyed voice from the table interrupted Hale's thoughts.
"I'm sorry." Janet, whose face had reddened, apologized. Harry, the boy who was working with her, sniffed a bit and continued darkly "If there is a mistake, I bet he would know it was because you were dreaming about Red, that weirdo..."
Janet blushed even more. "He can't really, Harry...and I wasn't!" She just remembered to add.
Harry didn't like their new teacher, the elusive Mr. Douglas, Hale had noticed. It was partly because Douglas was often late, if he arrived at all, and partly because Harry was genuinely good at chemistry, but Mr.Douglas didn't seem to want to admit it, like old Kerrigan had.
When the group project had been announced, Harry's combative eyes had swept the class, stopping on Hale, but dismissing him as too unsocial and passive. Finally he had picked Janet, as one of the best students on the subject, and then Harry had gone straight to her desk. The girl wasn't even given time to consider.
Mr. Douglas, who seemed amused at the chain of events, caught Hale's sight, and nodded to him, as one perceptive person to another.
